It has been shown that there is a direct link between social media and the increase in depressive episodes and self-harm in young people. This is especially prevalent in girls, it is thought that this is because of the nature of the way some girls can use these applications as a platform for bullying.
Social media can be great for connecting to others, but it can put a lot of pressure on young people to conform and can leave them feeling inadequate at a particularly vulnerable time in their lives. Social media is also the perfect platform for groomers to access a wide range of potential targets, they can find out very personal details from social media profiles and use that information to make a connection extremely quickly. We teach young people about the dangers of sharing information on social media and the risks involved in connecting with people that you don’t know online. We also encourage young people to recognise what healthy relationships look like and set good boundaries for themselves.
