Holiday Wish List: Appropriate video games for young people

Updated: Jan 15

The Breck Foundation strongly advocates for safe and age-appropriate gaming experiences for children. Choosing games that align with a young person’s age and maturity level is essential to protect them from harmful content, such as violence or inappropriate themes, while fostering a positive and educational gaming environment.

By selecting age-appropriate games:

  • Children stay safe online: Games designed for their age group often include safeguards to limit exposure to online predators and harmful interactions.

  • Encourages healthy habits: Games tailored to their developmental stage help nurture creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.

  • Reduces exposure to harmful influences: Age ratings ensure that kids aren’t exposed to themes or images that could negatively impact their emotional and psychological well-being.

Parents and caregivers can use tools like PEGI (Pan-European Game Information) or ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) to make informed choices when selecting games. By making thoughtful decisions, we can ensure that gaming remains a safe, fun, and enriching experience for children.
